Who should pay maintenace when each parent has one child each?

After being seperated more than 10 years and paying child maintenace the youngest child is now living with dad, but the mother still wants maintanace for the child still living with her. I need to know where dad legally stands as I fail to see why he should have to pay when they each have a child living with them...Who should pay maintenace when each parent has one child each?
Legally they should cancel each other out really, but if one parent is working and the other isn't, the worker may get screwed for maintenance. (which is wrong IMO)Who should pay maintenace when each parent has one child each?
i think it depends on who is earning and how much? if both of you are earning that it could just evening out and neither would paid.
its called child support.(not maintenance) non of them have to pay. but they both have to go to court
